Did anyone see the video doing the rounds of Anderson Silva training with Steven Segal? Segal showed Silva a takedown defence that consisted of a double palm strike / fend that seemed like it might be effective.. Then Brian Stann busted out a single hand fend on Mike Massenzio, stopping a takedown in its tracks and almost KO'ing Massenzio with a follow-up right to his now fully exposed head. Coming from the antipodes, I had always wondered why a standard rugby fend was never used to prevent a double leg takedown (known as a tackle in rugby ) then saw Segal show something like it to Silva, and then the next UFC saw Stann use it... So, did Segal just introduce a new move to MMA, or has anyone else used that sort of fend against wrestlers to such great effect before? The particular move I'm talking about is just before the end of the fight when Massenzio shoots for a takedown but Stann stops him by shoving his open hand in Massenzios face stopping him in his tracks and forcing his head up and back, just in time for a cross or hook. It seems to me that is the best defence a striker has against a wrestler, because it turns a defence into an attack.

damn john howards eye just got bigger and bigger i wonder if it is broken, haha i loved jones stance monkey 10 foot stance, not sure if anyone noticed matyushenko constantly looking down at jones maybe he was worried about the takedown from jones and was going to try grab a leg to take jones down, loved the griffin and olivera fight, that was a viscious hook from the fireball kid and griffin went straight face first(human reaction if you fall face first you almost instanly put your hands in front to stop you face palming griffin didnt do that) the olivera fight sub reminded me of those old western gun slingers the way he switched up the triangle to lock it on the munoz and okami was decent but munoz seemed to get lost after the numerous failed takedown(if it didnt work the first 8 times what makes you think the 9th will work) anyways looking forward to 117 mainly junior vs big country and anderson vs sonnen this post came direct from gilligans island

Didnt Bas also talk about the open hand on last InsideMMA show? I think I heard something... Yeah, I was kidding about it being Segal.. just pointing out we're unlikely to have heard the last of it I suspect some of the NFL guys might have been thinking a fend might help stop takedowns as well. It just seems so obvious to anyone who has played union, league, or NFL to put a hand out to stop a tackle. Hell, in union every tackle ends up in a 5 on 5 grappling match, lol. Assuming you can't side step it that is The reason I think it hasn't happened all that often is that strikers want to strike at the shoot (knee, uppercut) and grapplers do what they are taught... to sprawl and stuff the takedown. But a fend stuffs the takedown and leaves you an opening to attack the wrestler when he is most vulnerable - bent down reaching for your legs - but is not a part of a the arts usually seen in the cage. I don't know why every wrestler doesn't start the fight like a linebacker... I don't care who you are, a good tackle will take you down if I have a run up

Yeah it was a sweet event.
Gomi looked very impressive considering that Griffin has fought some tough guys and had never been finished in his career.
Jones is a beast. They need to up the level for him now so we can see how good he really is.
Okami put on a takedown defence and technical striking clinic as expected. Surprised that one judge gave Munoz the fight, but then again most of the judges don't appear to know what they are watching half the time.
Jake Ellenberger looked good although he took a few shots, he landed some great shots on Howard as was evident by the size of his eye that was visibly growing during the round lol.
I agree that Charles Oliveira pulled of a nice submission but I feel Elkins has plenty of time to get his right arm out and it was a lack of experience that caused him to get submitted.
All in all an awesome event. Getting pumped up for UFC 117 now after watching the Countdown show.
