Details, including a rather deep fight card, for a previously reported Powerhouse World Promotions' "War on the Mainland" event are coming together.
The event, which takes place Aug. 14 at the 5,000-seat Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif., airs on pay-per-view for $29.95.
Three titles fights are part of the card, which is headlined by former UFC champ Tim Sylvia (26-6) vs. former top Strikeforce title challenger Paul Buentello (28-12) for the vacant PWP heavyweight belt.
MMAjunkie.com first reported some of the event's details in June, when former UFC champ and recent WEC fighter Jens Pulver (22-13-1) confirmed he'll put off a planned retirement and fight one-time Bellator Fighting Championships competitor Diego Garijo (4-1) on the card.
Although Sylvia and Buentello nearly crossed paths during the UFC's lean heavyweight years (Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski dominated the division and held the belt for all but a few months from 2003 to 2007), the "War on the Mainland" bout marks their first meeting.
Both heavyweights are looking for a string of victories to get back on MMA's bigger stages. Sylvia rebounded from an embarrassing nine-second KO loss to 48-year-old boxer Ray Mercer in 2009 with recent stoppage wins over Jason Riley and Mariusz Pudzianowski. Buentello, meanwhile, recently scored a decision win over top prospect Bryan Humes in his first fight since a release from the UFC earlier this year.
As with Sylvia vs. Buentello, the show also features five-round title fights in the light-heavyweight and middleweight divisions. UFC vet Jason Lambert (24-11) meets Allan Goes (17-3) for the 205-pound championship, and former UFC middleweight challenger Thales Leites (17-3-1) meets Strikeforce vet Falaniko Vitale (27-9) for the 185-pound title.
Other confirmed bouts include middleweights Gustavo Machado (18-8-1) vs. Rick Reeves (10-3), welterweights Jorge Ortiz (16-5-1) vs. Terry Martin (19-8), and lightweights Joao Silva (3-0) vs. Erin Beach (1-0).
"The depth of our field is unmatched," PWP CEO Brian Manna stated."We not only wanted to make sure that we had three really good fights like we do but to insure that all of the fights on this show would feature high-quality fighters, as well as competitive, entertaining matches. These fights are all very well matched from top to bottom."Source: http://mmajunkie.com/news/19871/sylvia- ... nd-ppv.mma
