Silva defiant on Brazilian TV, Maia faces off with the champ
Anderson Silva is probably sick of talking about his bizarre behavior at UFC 112 but he's made his own bed and now he's going to have to speak about it for a while. Silva, back in Brazil, appeared on the Brazilian television show, "Domingão do Faustão" with host Fausto Corrêa da Silva.
This was no hero worship or puff piece spot. Corrêa da Silva, was prepped and went right at Silva about his behavior during his win over Demain Maia. Better yet, after Silva once again was unapologetic for what he did, the show brought out Maia for his take (2:02 mark).
"We fought, the fight started a bit warm and then started to heart more. And that's that," said Maia as he paused. "I don't have much to say. it was what happened. The fans saw what happened."
Corrêa da Silva then asked if Silva planned on using the same tactics in the future or would revisit his approach.
"Yeah, we always have to review what we do, I am always learning. The thing about life is that we are always learnign with our mistakes and with what we do right," said Silva. "And I think I foguth well, I executed my game and disrupted Demian's game. I couldn't fall into his game because he's a BJJ specialist."
Corrêa da Silva then said, "so this was really strategy that you implemented, in no moment in the fight did you intend to disrespect him?"
"No, not even close. I didn't get to where I am, being a champion in four different promotions by disrespecting anyone. In the contrary, I think what got me here was humbleness."
Maia challenged the humble claim. When he was asked about his role models, Maia took a not so subtle swipe at Silva's behavior.
"They are my idols," Maia said mentioning Wanderlei Silva and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. "I think for you to be considered an idol you have to be an idol at all times. You are an example to people and an example with the atittudes that you choose to show."
Silva was also asked by the crowd if he did anything illegal (3:42 mark).
"What you can't do is hit your opponent's genitals, hit the back of the head or stomp your opponent on the floor, the rest is valid as long as you win, and that's what happened, I won. (Dana White) can say whatever he wants, he's the owner."
Apparently, the talk White had with Silva didn't do a whole lot. Did he get the message that he'll be cut if uses the same tactics in his next fight? He's certainly not cowering in fear with those comments.
This is actually a two-part interview over the course of 17 minutes. In part one, there's an interesting undertone that Brazilian fighters are not mainstream stars in their homeland. Corrêa da Silva states several times that the MMA stars of Brazil are more recognized and appreciated outside the country.Source: http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/blog/cagewr ... mma,235292
