UFC 111: St. Pierre vs. Hardy is an upcoming mixed martial arts event to be held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on March 27, 2010 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. This event is the first UFC visit to the state since UFC 78 in November 2007.

Background

The UFC Primetime series will return to build up the UFC Welterweight Championship fight between Georges St-Pierre and Dan Hardy

Martin Kampmann was originally set to fight Ben Saunders, but Kampmann was replaced by Jake Ellenberger due to a deep cut suffered in training by Kampmann.

Ricardo Funch was forced to pull out of a fight against Matthew Riddle for an undisclosed reason. UFC newcomer Greg Soto was named as his replacement.

Spike TV will be be broadcasting two live preliminary bouts one hour before the PPV broadcast begins. The bouts confirmed for this portion of the card are Nate Diaz vs. Rory Markham and Ricardo Almeida vs. Matt Brown

This event will be seen in movie theaters throughout the United States via National CineMedia's Fathom event distribution service.[6] Also, it will play at the Cineplex Odeon chain in Canada.

On March 10, 2010 it was announced that the event was officially sold out.

There was also some controversy that the UFC airbrushed Hardy's tattoo which reads "om mani padme hum" for their promotional poster. UFC president Dana White later admitted that this was done so as to not provoke the Chinese goverment.

On March 25, 2010 Thiago Alves was removed from the card due to brain irregularity from a pre-fight CAT scan.[10] After learning of the removal, Ben Saunders, who was scheduled to fight Jake Ellenberger, requested Alves's opponent, Jon Fitch, replace Ellenberger on the card. As a result, Ellenberger will not compete but was promised his "show" and "win" money to make up for the last minute switch.

This is such a good card, it should be an awesome event. Pretty much guaranteed some quick finishes, with a few of them surely being knockouts... Loads of outstanding fighters (including a few personal favourites), excellent match-ups... Can't wait!

Has the potential to be the best UFC ever imo

Yeah really looking forward to this card. It will be interesting to see how Hardy goes against GSP.

Also if Mir can continue his recent form.

Dont you just love the Primetime shows? I just finished watching the second and I thought it was very interesting to hear some more about Hardys background. he really is a martial artist and I will route for him now i think. Still two episodes to go... but always loved the traditional asian martial arts and to train in China sounds awesome, love the kung Fu katas he does too, so sweeeet

Thoroughly excited to see Ben Saunders step in against Jon Fitch. Ellenberger and Fitch pose threats in the same areas, although Ellenberger is more likely to finish. Fitch has much more name recognition and Saunders will be the underdog in this fight. He's already been training for a wrestler and that's Fitch's biggest strength. At least in the event that he loses, he won't slide down the rankings. He will simply be beaten by a guy who is supposed to beat him. And in the unlikely event that he pulls off an upset, he's a title contender.
