Combate Global 38: Martinez vs. Vergara is an upcoming mixed martial arts event scheduled for May 29, 2022 at the Cisneros Studios in Miami, Florida, United States.

Fight Card

Main Card

David Martinez vs. Arturo Vergara 135 lbs
Marina Sanchez vs. Jade Jorand 105 lbs
Chris Boasso vs. Tino Gilaranz 145 lbs
Pierre Daguzan vs. Alan Cantú Garcia 135 lbs
M. Cubillo Fernandez vs. Justin Vazquez 145 lbs
Jackie MacLean vs. Blanca Medina 125 lbs
Santiago Monreal vs. Edwin Sarria 125 lbs

Background

Combate Global’s bantamweight champion David “The Black Spartan” Martinez (6-1) returns to action, but his title won’t be on the line as he faces Chile’s Arturo “El Makako” Vergara (2-0 MMA; 3-1 Kickboxing) in a highly anticipated bantamweight main event at CG 2022 May 29: Martinez vs Vergara.

Also France’s Jade Jorand (0-2) is in search for her first victory inside la jaula as she welcomes Marina Sanchez, who makes her professional debut, and Chris Boasso (3-2) returns to action against Spain’s Tino Gilaranz (4-2) in a featherweight fight.

Martinez vs Vergara

Martinez returns to action after defeating three men in a one-night tournament crowning him the bantamweight champion back in April of 2022. However, his first title defense has been put on hold as his original opponent and Copa Combate 2021 winner Ireland’s Frans Mlambo was unable to compete due to an injury.

Therefore, Martinez had less than three weeks to strategize on a new opponent.

The Bonebreaker fighter, however, adjusted and is willing to take on Vergara, who trains out of the GOAT Shed Academy in Miami, Fl.

Vergara is coming off an impressive nine second flying knee knockout earlier this month. The Chilean fighter has a solid background in kickboxing having competed in several fights. Prior to his recent victory, he defeated Steve Orozco by TKO in the first round, which should be a sign that Martinez should not take lightly.

Both men count on great stand up with Vergara being the less conservative and creative with his style. Martinez is the calmer and more patient fighter and he knows, although the title is not on line, he has much to prove with a victory.

Expect both men to trade from the start with potentially Martinez exploring his grappling as he has the advantage on the floor. Vergara needs to move and use his distance to prevent Martinez from shooting in for a takedown.

Jorand vs Sanchez

In a featured women’s bout at 105 lbs, France’s Jorand (0-2) returns to action against Sanchez.

With a long history in kickboxing, Jorand, a European Muay Thai champion, is itching for her first win insde la jaula. She trains out of Veteran Training Center. Her last fight was against Gloria Bravo which she lost due to an arm bar in the first round back in September.

However, she is more than determined for a win as she takes on Sanchez who trains out of Ares Arena. She has a 2-1 record as an amateur, but feels confident she has what it takes for a professional victory against Jorand.

Her last competition was in June of last year; it was her lone defeat in the amateur levels.

Count on both ladies to deliver a fast pace back-and-forth stand up fight as they both are confident with their hands and kicks. However, the advantage goes to Jorand who has already experienced la jaula.

Boasso vs Gilaranz

To kickoff the main card, Chris Boasso (3-2) wants to earn another victory, but Tino Gilaranz, who last fought for CG back in 2019, stands in his way.

Boasso is coming off a defeat by the hands of Miguel Gonzalez who won by guillotine choke in the first round back in November. However, he feels confidant he has sharpened his skills over at Sandord MMA with the likes of coach Dietter Navarro and Henri Hooft.

However, Gilaranz, who is currently on a two fight win streak, plans on extending his wins. The Spainard who trains at Team Dokkodo counts on a teakwondo stance with good kicks and hands.

Both men match up well, however, the advantage on the ground game goes to Boasso. Expect both men to exchange from the start but later Boasso could potentially explore Gilaranz ground game.
