x264 because it's new and cool. I don't want to live in the past. Still, I fully respect xvid, mpeg, etc.

I do not like x264, but download it now anyways because xvids arent as common.
x264 seems to have messed up pixels a lot throughout the video in spots, kind of annoying.
Yes the picture IS a bit sharper when it isnt messed lol
Or maybe it's just my ghetto computer :P

Damn, you guys really dug deep to revive this thread. haha.

Anyway, the thread topic is codec preference of a rip from a DVD source. It really doesn't matter what codec's used, but essentially on how you intend to play it back. Quality won't get any better considering the source is still DVD.

Everyone has their own preference for video playback and this preference is usaully dependent on your own hardware advantages and/or limitations. Surely x264 is superior to xvid but as far as preference the best answer is the one that will deliver the most enjoyable veiwing experience on the device(s) that you own.

I uploaded my very first torrent to mma-torrents the other day (UFC.157.Rousey.vs.Carmouche.DSR.XviD-XWT), a standard scene release, xvid in an .avi container. Bitch got over 400 snatches! Granted it was the first upload for a PPV many were waiting for, but many more "superior" formats followed and guess what? They weren't snatched nearly as many times as the xvid. "But x264 is so much better than xvid!," is what people keep saying.. So what?

Personally, I enjoy all formats, and I download depending on how I intend to watch. For example:

- UFC PPV, 720p on my big screen only, stand-alone media player. No exceptions.

- Pre-lims or whatever, xvid or anything else is fine on my laptop. 720p is not necessary on the smaller screen.

- Inside-MMA, honestly I hardly watch the video because I'm driving in my car. Audio is all I really need.

- Porn.. depending on where I watch.. haha. Sometimes even on my phone.. haha
