First of all. Dana White owns 9% of UFC/Zuffa. Smallest part of the company.*
We, including the press etc are giving him a lot of heat about decisions he had a small part of. This is bussiness, not anything else. Sheik Tahnoon of Abu Dhabi owns more of UFC/Zuffa then Dana White does. (I never see Ariel Helwani trying to inteview him about anything...)
I think this is important to remember when we talk about Dana did this and Dana did that. He is just as much a slave to their demands as he is a friend and a co owner and it is not necesarrily always the case that Zuffa does what is best for MMA or what Dana White would think is best for MMA.
Still Dana has the job of being the "outer face" of Zuffa. He HAS to say these things that he says because it is his job and why he gets 9% of the company. Then if anything he says, wants or predicts will come true is finally not his decision at all. Zuffa work with a board of CEO's just like any other corporation and they will do all they can to dominate the market, take over and buy up concurents.
On the other hand, thanks to Dana and Fertittas love for the actual sport they are really trying to make an organisation that is to a large part about what the fans want and what MMA is about, and that I think is the key to their success. It creates the credebility and love from the fans they need and doesnt just make it some "human cockfighting competition" but a community thing.
Im not sure what I think about Zuffa buying Strikeforce, but to be honest, wasnt this exactly what everybody wanted?
Fedor can now fight UFC fighters. Female fighters are included in Zuffa fighters. Zuffa has a connection to Japan/DREAM thrue Strikeforce and Scott Coker.
I understand that its sad to see something you have enjoyed dissapear eventually, but if it means something positive in the longrun I think it's great.
We still have smaller promotions like Bellator and MFC etc doing their best to become players on the market and more will come.
I see evolution as something inevitable and even if it hurts, it hurts even more to go against it. Go with the flow and hope for awesome matchups in the future folks!
*Zuffa, LLC is an American sports promotion company specializing in mixed martial arts. It was founded in January 2001 in Las Vegas, Nevada by Station Casinos executives Frank Fertitta III and Lorenzo Fertitta to be the parent entity of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) after they purchased it from the Semaphore Entertainment Group. Lorenzo Fertitta is the company’s CEO and Chairman while Dana White runs the day-to-day operations. Zuffa is co-owned by Fertitta brothers (40.5%), Dana White (9%) and Sheik Tahnoon of Abu Dhabi (Flash Entertainment) (10%). (Wikipedia)
The word "Zuffa" is an Italian word, meaning "brawl", "scuffle" or "fight with no rules"
