Jeff Curran now has an opponent for his first fight inside the octagon in seven years.
Sources close to the event today told MMAjunkie.com (
http://www.mmajunkie.com) that Curran (33-13-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) is set to meet onetime WEC title challenger and current UFC fighter Scott Jorgensen (12-4 MMA, 1-0 UFC) at UFC 137.
MMAFighting.com first reported the possibility of the matchup, which is scheduled for the bantamweight class.
As MMAjunkie.com first reported earlier today, Curran recently signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC for a possible fall debut.
UFC 137 takes place Oct. 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The pay-per-view main card features a welterweight title tilt between reigning champ Georges St-Pierre and soon-to-be-ex-Strikeforce champ Nick Diaz.
Currn vs. Jorgensen likely will be part of the preliminary card.
Curran, who unsuccessfully vied for WEC belt against then-champion Urijah Faber at WEC 31, hasn't fought in the UFC since a decision loss to Matt Serra way back at UFC 46 in early 2004. However, Curran won 15 of his next 16 fights from 2004 to 2007.
Following his latest WEC stint (which concluded with four consecutive losses to former champs and title challengers), Curran strung together four wins in five fights to get the UFC's attention.
Jorgensen, meanwhile, got off to a great start in his first fight inside the octagon by knocking out Ken Stone at The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale. The win eased the pain from his previous performance, a loss to then-WEC bantamweight champ (and current UFC champ) Dominick Cruz at WEC 53.
During his stint with the WEC, Jorgensen went 7-2 with the promotion and earned two "Fight of the Night" bonuses for his aggressive style.
The latest UFC 137 card now includes:
Champ Georges St-Pierre vs. Nick Diaz (for UFC welterweight title)
Carlos Condit vs. B.J. Penn
Cheick Kongo vs. Matt Mitrione
Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic vs. Roy Nelson
Dennis Siver vs. Sam Stout
Hatsu Hioki vs. George Roop
Eliot Marshall vs. Brandon Vera
Tyson Griffin vs. Bart Palaszewski
Tim Credeur vs. Brad Tavares
Jeff Curran vs. Scott Jorgensen
Danny Downes vs. Ramsey Nijem
