Fabricio Werdum apparently will take an extended layoff this fall and winter.

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker today confirmed to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the heavyweight fighter will be on the bench until January 2011. As a result, no opponent has been set for his return.

"The date is really to be determined because Fabricio is not going to fight until the beginning of next year, so he's going to be sidelined for the next five months," Coker said.

Werdum (14-4-1 MMA, 3-0 SF) said this past month that he intends to take the rest of 2010 off after undergoing a much-needed surgery on his elbow.

The fighter said he had repeatedly put the surgery off over a two-year period, and worried that it could affect future fights, he finally opted to get it done.

Manager Richard Wilner could not be reached to verify whether the elbow surgery prompted the layoff, though he recently told MMAFighting.com that Werdum might not need to go under the knife, and that if he did, the layoff would be brief.

Werdum scored the upset of the decade when he submitted Fedor Emelianenko in 69 seconds at "Strikeforce and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Werdum" back in June. It was his third consecutive victory since he signed with the promotion following a UFC release in late 2008.

Wilner said Werdum would be open to a rematch with Emelianenko or a fight with Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, whom he defeated under the now-defunct PRIDE banner in May 2006.

But for the time being, the Brazilian fighter is taking it easy. He recently celebrated his 33rd birthday and has conducted several training seminars around the world, where he has no doubt shown countless hopefuls the submission hold he used to turn the MMA world on its head.

I question just how serious the injury is. IMHO this is the best way for everyone, but its not "real" as such.

I think Strikeforce and Coker painted themselves into a corner. They spent so much (I'm guessing) to get Emelianenko that they sort of forgot about their champ and tied Strikeforce's name to Fedor's closer than even their own champ. They treated Fedor like the champ, and the Champ like a contender or something.

So they started giving first dibs to Fedor, assuming he would always win, but when he lost they were in the situation that they had to either drop Fedor down to "just another contender" status, or they have to jump him into a title shot. So Werdum has to become "injured" so the he can fight the winner of Fedor v Overeem, uniting the real title with the virtual title that Fedor held.

So right now, my guess is this is Werdum's and Strikeforce's way of pressuring Fedor to take the title shot. The slot is open for 6 months, and if he doesn't take it, then Werdum steps up and Fedor is consigned to history. If he does take it and loses, then we can say "he's passed his prime". If he wins we can say "he IS the greatest", and then he can rematch Werdum, hopefully for him and Strikeforce, erasing the blemish.

Yeah or Werdum doesn't want to fight against Overeem and get mauled, and would like to sit atop the pedestal for a little while as the man to beat Fedor.

Even straight after the fight when they asked him about a potential title match against Overeem, he said he wanted a rematch with Fedor. Seems to me that they are all afraid of fighting Overeem. Overeem needs to get his arse over to the UFC where the fighters will have the balls to face him.

true, but I don't blame them... I'd be scared too, to fight Overeem. More than I'd be scared to fight Lesnar.

Right now Overeem should be number 1 in the world I believe. Lesnar hasn't shown he could beat an Overeem but Overeem has shown that on any given day, and especially unless Lesnar gets some real work in on his hands, he could beat any one in the world.

To me that is the biggest fight I'm interested in seeing: Lesnar vs Overeem.
