Just over two weeks after the UFC suspended Matt Mitrione for making transphobic comments about transgender fighter Fallon Fox, “Meathead” now has his next fight booked.
Mitrione will face fellow “Ultimate Fighter” Season 10 alum Brendan Schaub at UFC on Fox 8, which takes place July 27 at Seattle’s Key Arena. Headlined by a flyweight title showdown pitting Demetrious Johnson against John Moraga, the evening’s Fox-broadcast main draw will also see Miesha Tate square off with Liz Carmouche in a pivotal women’s 135-pound affair.
Mitrione, 34, was handed an undisclosed fine and suspension from the UFC after making derogatory remarks directed at Fox in a public interview, calling the transgender fighter a “lying, sick, sociopathic, disgusting freak.” The former “TUF” competitor rebounded from back-to-back defeats in his most recent outing, knocking out British grappler Philip De Fries in just 19 seconds earlier this month at UFC on Fuel TV 9.
Schaub, 30, also halted a two-fight losing skid in his most recent contest, taking a grinding unanimous decision from Lavar Johnson on Feb. 23 at UFC 157. Prior to that victory, “The Hybrid” suffered consecutive knockout defeats, first falling to former Pride Fighting Championships titlist Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and then stumbling against Ben Rothwell in his lone appearance of 2012.
