I'm trying to encode the MKV's to H.264 with MP4 containers but I'm having little luck.

What is the best encoder and container to use to view videos on Xbox and PS3? I'm using the ever feature rich MediaCoder.

Thanks,
JOe K.

Hi mate, unfortunately I dont own a ps3 or xbox but I made a guide for Super C that you might be able to profit from:

[Useful Software] - SUPER (C) encoder XviD, MKV, MP4 etc w/ guide + videoguide

# Sony - PS3 (MP4) Convert any supported input file to a PS3 MP4 file. Convert PS3 MP4 files to any other format. The rendered PS3 MP4 files are created using the most advanced H.264 video codec.
# Sony - PS3 (BluRay) Convert any supported input file to a PS3 M2TS file. Convert PS3 M2TS files to any other format. The rendered PS3 M2TS files are created using the BluRay HD M2TS video codec providing an outstanding quality.

Other then that I googled and this guide looked good:

PS3 Media Server. Simply awesome. Works best with the PS3 but also works (mostly) with the 360. Stream HD and SD content with ease. No need to re-encode anything, it transcodes everything on the fly as it streams. LOVE it!

for compatibility with both systems DIVX works nicely. I use Xilisoft converter. It's a pay program but it's been the most reliable.

mkv2vob is one of the best out there.ive used it for years.i gave up on ps2mediaserver,it lags alot i found and the 1080p was dreadfull, never got them to work properly.
this prog is a drag n drop, muxes the audio sdo the ps3 will rekognize it.if you have CFW on your ps3 jusr grap showtime,it plays the whole kitten kaboodle

I agree, why do extra work? The media server is the best way to do this with no time consumption and all formats working.
