Post subject:  [Poll] Fighter of the Month: March

Another new feature. Fighter of the Month. What are listed are the Top-4 from every week from my reviews for March. With the criteria given, we'll give a Gold, Silver, and Bronze to the fighters of the month. Pick your Top-5 and the awards shall be given!

Dominick Cruz (WEC): Became the new WEC Bantamweight Champion after a defeat of Brian Bowles. Weird as the injury stoppage was, Cruz dominated the fight and earned the strap.

Jorge Santiago (Sengoku): Avenged his loss to Mamed Khalidov by wearing down the challenger en route to a 5-round decision win to retain his Sengoku Middleweight Championship.

Joseph Benavidez (WEC): Pulled off a massive upset by dominating Miguel Torres and forcing a tap out of the former WEC Bantamweight champ.

Marlon Sandro (Sengoku): Knocked out Tomonari Kanomata in nine seconds and earned a Featherweight title shot against Masanori Kanehara. Sandro is just scary and has been a destroyer of men since the bizarre decision loss to Omigawa in August.

Hector Lombard (CFC) - The Bellator middleweight champ defended his CFC Middleweight Championship against Art Santore in Australia, extending his winning streak to 13 in a row.

Nathan Coy (SportFight) - The SportFight welterweight champion destroyed SportFight lightweight champ Travis Bush in just 16 seconds to retain his title with a vicious knee.

Jake O'Brien (Fight Festival) - In the co-main event of Fight Festival 27 in Finland, the UFC vet defeated M-1 vet Toni Valtonen. O'Brien has won his last two fights since his release from UFC.

Bernard Magalhaes (CFC) - Upsetted Adrian Pang to capture the CFC Lightweight Championship via decision.

Bibiano Fernandes (Dream) - Defends his Dream Featherweight Championship with an upset split decision win over Joachim Hansen.

Junior dos Santos (UFC) - Gonzaga, Werdum, Struve, Cro Cop, Yvel. That's this man's resume in the UFC, and none of these went to the judges. JDS is a monster and I can't believe he's not fighting for a title. He's absolutely deserving of a title shot. I think moreso than Velasquez.

Jon Jones (UFC) - An elbow from the depths of Hell puts away Brandon Vera and catapults Jones into the LHW elite in the main event of an extremely strange night of fights.

Hiroko Yamanaka (Jewels) - In a matchup of two Top-25 women in the main event of Jewels 7, Yamanaka defeated Hitomi Akano by a split decision and catapulting her into the Top-20.

Shane Carwin (UFC) As much as we all wanted to see Mir get his revenge on Brock, it was Carwin who had other ideas, surviving Mir in the first and breaking him down in the 2nd. Carwin is officially the most dangerous striker in the Heavyweight division and I can't wait to see him take it to Brock.

Georges St. Pierre (UFC) Dan Hardy talked a huge game, and we all hoped we'd see something different out of GSP, but alas we didn't. It was GSP v. 1.0. Takedowns and smotherings for five rounds. Granted, he had some great subs on Hardy, but no way Dan was gonna tap. St. Pierre retains via unanimous.

Lavar Johnson (Strikeforce) In his first fight from almost being shot to death, Johnson gets the TKO win over Lolohea Mahe in Strikeforce Challengers 7 to keep his fantastic comeback story going.

Nate Diaz (UFC) Now I HATE the Diaz brothers. Seriously, HATE. But Nate, who was fighting his first bout at 170, took a fight against Rory Markham, who dickishly came in at 177, and proceded to beat the shit out of him. Nate said he came in the day of at 175, and normally I'd laugh it off, but he fought for years at 155, and Markham, once again, failed to make weight, this time against a LIGHTWEIGHT. He came into the fight looking easily at 200 lbs. Nate dominated him. Used his reach and striking, took his back multiple times and TKO'd him in the first round. Fantastic show.

Kenny Florian (UFC) - Straight-up outclassed Takanori Gomi for three rounds, outboxing The Fireball Kid before taking him down and making his submit.

Roy Nelson (UFC) - Big Country TKO'd Stefan Struve in the first round decisively to establish himself as a player in the UFC Heavyweight division.

Jorge Rivera (UFC) - To my surprise, dominated Nate Quarry with multiple knockdowns before TKOing him.

Gleison Tibau (UFC) - Dominated a legend in Caol Uno by beating him into a pulp for a TKO win.

Joseph Benavidez - Amazing upset performance
Junior dos Santos - Pushed himself into genuine title contention
Jon Jones - Showed himself to be proper legit with another dominating win
Shane Carwin - Loved the fight!
Jorge Rivera - Just amazing in his fight against Quarry.

Tough call between JDS and Florian. Probably should've gone with Kenny... ;-)

I know I could have chosen 5, but finally i chose only 3.

Marlon Sandro - This guy has had a tough time to get over his deamons. Problems with drugs and life in general seems to have limited his abilities to compete, but defenitely not to win once he does. I like a guy that can perform in the ring like Sandro.

Junior dos Santos - Defenitely deserves more attention. Very crisp and powerful style. Me like. He defenitely made a step up in his last performance and right now noone can doubt that hes a title contender.

Kenny Florian - After loosing to BJ many might have doubted Florians capabilities. But after his great peformance against Gomi, (the man who came back to revenge his loss to BJ Penn), well after Kennys last performance I am impressed with how he is still developing as a fighter. He defenitely has a good attitude and is a great ambassador for the sport too.

Thx for making the poll, great idea :)

I chose 3 as well. For me it's been Triple J this month.

Joseph Benavidez
Junior dos Santos
Jon Jones

1. GSP

Showed once again that he's the very best. Didnt felt for the psychological 'attacks' of hardy and dominated the entire fight. Showed great heart not to break Hardy's bones when he had the chance.

2. KenFlo

Showed improvement once again, dominated the entire fight against a legend, showed once again he's well-rounded. Good job

Didnt check any more, although I shouldve checked Jon Jones as well for his great performance against Vera. Both Carwin and Dos Santos proved themselves worthy against a bigger opponent, but I saw nothing new coming from them and I really need to see them against multiple top contenders first.

Jones - Fast, dangerous elbows and a just overwhelming victory. He knows how to excite you with his style and heart, any time, any place against any one.

Carwin - Knocking out guys so fast and not just the weak opponents. Once his fist connects it is basically over.

Dos Santos - He is great but I have to disagree on you about the fact that he deserves it more than Cain. Cain is, like Carwin said in Sirius XM, maybe not the biggest most muscled fighter but probably one of the strongest.

Cruz - Too bad the fight was stopped due to injury of his opponent but he was beating him up anyway.

GSP - Not the most impressive fight from a crowd point of view but he is so fast with his take downs and on the ground. It is as if he is dancing on top of his opponent like Fred in his best days.

My picks were also based on the strength of both fighters in the ring not just the winner.

Post subject:  Re: [Poll] Fighter of the Month: March

Guess I will add the results of this poll:

Shane Carwin 17% 17% [ 15 ]
Jon Jones 16% 16% [ 14 ]
Junior dos Santos 14% 14% [ 12 ]
Dominick Cruz 9% 9% [ 8 ]
Joseph Benavidez 9% 9% [ 8 ]
Kenny Florian 8% 8% [ 7 ]
Georges St. Pierre 7% 7% [ 6 ]
Roy Nelson 7% 7% [ 6 ]
Nate Diaz 5% 5% [ 4 ]
Bibiano Fernandes 3% 3% [ 3 ]
Marlon Sandro 1% 1% [ 1 ]
Jorge Rivera 1% 1% [ 1 ]
Gleison Tibau 1% 1% [ 1 ]

So the top 5 fighters of March are 1 Carwin, 2 Jones, 3 Dos Santos, 4 & 5 Cruz and Benavidez.
