It's hard to go past Big John. He has so much experience in the big fights and is one of the best in the business. I also think Herb Dean is a really good referee, nothing beats the look he gave C B Dollaway after he tapped then complained :)

Ive seen Steve Mazzagatti leave a few fights go to long to the point where I was concerned for the fighter.

Its always fun watching Yves Lavigne cos you never know what kind of comedy you are going to see.

Or that fight he stopped then let it keep going LOL.

Got to be Big John, but Herb is very good also. Both of them are so composed in the cage and always seem to see the extra details that some others don't. Plus, they aren't like some newer refs who are constantly telling the fighters to work or always standing them up quickly - probably because both are jiu-jitsu trained if I recall correctly.

As a side note, I think that Mark Goddard should be on the list. He's very good as well.

Easily Big John. His overall composure, knowledge and his work ethic as far as developing himself and others. Only other ref even close for me is Herb Dean.

Josh Rosenthal is a top level Jiu-jitsu competitor and a great referee.....

I saw Yves Lavigne was refereing for Bellator and I cant help to think, whats the deal with the referees, are they freelance and can ref any event or fight where ever they want or do they have contracts with the different organisations. In a way they are a part of the whole show too right?

The way that I understad it is, the refs are all assigned by the athletic commissions. So while fighters can petition against certain refs (like Brock requesting that Steve Mazzagatti not ref his fight with Couture) the organizations like UFC, Bellator etc do not have direct control over who gets assigned. At least that is how it is supposed to work.
