How exactly does seeding work?

I use u torrent and when i download a file it says seeding but it doesnt tell me at what rate or what % its at till its done i see on here it says to seed for 48 hours at least i just wana make sure i do it right and dont get in trouble as long as its been seeding for 48 hours i can delete the file right?
