Simply put, for a reason I would like to figure out, Deluge has significantly faster and more consistent upload rates to this tracker than I am able to obtain with any version of utorrent.

I've noticed a strange phenomenon with utorrent, in both 1.8.x and 2.0. When i start the client, i get decent upload rates to this tracker, but over time the consistency and speed drops to a fraction of a kilobyte. When using Deluge for Windows however, my upload rate pretty much stays capped regardless of how long I keep the program open.

I've played with the "who's who" of options in both programs, and have made sure my Win7 firewall is set correctly with each respective program.

After using both programs I prefer the interface and coding of utorrent vastly over the open-source Deluge. Also, in comparison to utorrent, Deluge leaves a much larger disk and memory footprint. I also don't like having to install the GTK+ runtime on my machine just to use a torrent client.

Simply put, Deluge outperforms utorrent in the area of consistently fast upload speeds, especially when its been left on for a long time. I would like to see if anyone else notices this. If they do, we might be able to isolate exactly what about utorrent causes very inconsistent upload rates when Deluge doesn't.

I'd like to see if this is a problem with my local system or simply all users of utorrent, and if any of you would be willing to installing Deluge to see if you get better upload rates, we could isolate the problem to utorrent. I would have no idea if its utorrent's ability to connect with the tracker or simply other peers on the tracker, but maybe someone who knows the inner workings of the tracker could rule out the tracker being the problem.

There have been a lot of reports of bad upload rates on this tracker, and after using Deluge and noticing vastly better upload rates, I'm starting to think its related to the utorrent client.

I would appreciate it if anyone who notices slower than expected upload speeds while using utorrent would try Deluge and see if they are noticeably better. If we find out that is the case, hopefully we will be able to fix the tracker or our utorrent clients to match Deluge's upload rate. If we can't however, i'll just go back to using Deluge, and recommend everyone else do the same.

Man this is really interesting. I have also noticed the exact same thing in µtorrent as you say. After some time it can slow down a LOT suddenly and strangely it seems to speed up again if you modify the settings a little, change port or so. it has not been really consistant or so so i have allowed it to slip, but now that you mention it too i just know its not a coincident.

I will sure take a good look at deluge. I actually saw you in the ppers list and wondered what client that was.

Thank you for your observation, i will test it and get back here when i have the time!

:)

I've been using Deluge for over a year now and it kicks ass. Best torrent app for linux I find.

I find that uTorrent can slow my router to a crawl and eventually kill web traffic (DNS lookups in particular). I've dropped the max number of connections a lot and only have 2 upload slots per torrent, but it will still eventually grind down to nothing - takes a few hours of constant downloading/uploading. If I kill uTorrent and maybe wait a minute or two then it will all come back, but occasionaly I have to reboot my router. I'm using uT 2.0.

Can you uTorrent people try setting bt.transp_disposition to 5 ?

Explanations here....

http://www.tmsnetwork.org/blog/%C2%B5to ... -explained

And this is why you might want to disable uTP, at least for now....

http://torrentfreak.com/utorrent-2-0-to ... ng-091031/

Quote:
With uTP, uTorrent (and the Mainline client) will become network aware by throttling itself if congestion in the network is detected. This will have a huge impact on ISP networks according to Simon Morris, BitTorrent’s VP of Product Management. “If uTP is successful it should result in a multi-billion dollar windfall in terms of savings for ISPs,” Morris told TorrentFreak

This means that the new uTorrent will eliminate the need for ISPs to throttle BitTorrent traffic in their networks. Of course, uTorrent users will also be affected by the new protocol. When needed, uTorrent will decrease the upload or download speed to avoid congestion.

According to Morris it’s mainly the upload speed that will be affected. “The throttling that matters most is actually not so much the download but rather the upload – as bandwidth is normally much lower UP than DOWN, the up-link will almost always get congested before the down-link does,” he explained.

(Despite that article being about uTorrent 2.0, uTP has been in there since I think 1.8.5, maybe earlier.

Furthermore, Deluge is banned at S* for misreporting stats to the tracker.

See the 2nd post in the thread here:

I'm gonna delete any posts from here on in regarding the unbanning of deluge - it seems that this topic has turned into a big "I want deluge" topic now. I will explain this here and hopefully it will satisfy all of you.

Deluge was banned a long time ago because it misreported stats. At one point the stats problem was apparently fixed (I think around the 0.5.9.X releases) so we looked into it and it got unbanned. However a little while later it was noticed that deluge once again failed to report correct stats. I had to do some extensive testing myself to verify that it was misreporting download and upload stats to an unacceptable degree. I can guarantee that if future versions of utorrent or rtorrent (the two most common clients) start to misreport stats by 20+%, those versions will be banned.

I have been in contact with several people who really really really really want deluge back. I can understand this, they got used to the client, and it seemed to perform well (stats lied tho so take that with a grain of salt). Currently, as far as I'm concerned, the stats are still being misreported, even in deluge 1.2.0 - but I am not going to keep taking the time for the deluge devs to get their asses in gear and get the client to report correctly. I don't care if it's a problem with deluge/libtorrent or whatever, the fact is that the stats do not get reported correctly. I know for a fact that it's not a 'tracker bug' as the devs have claimed - I have seen deluge on peerlists on several other trackers and it did the same thing as it does here, including ScT.

I won't be doing any more testing to see if it reports stats correctly in future versions, but if you can put together some convincing, easy to follow, proof that the stats are correctly reported to similar torrent trackers (private sites based on tbdev), that's the only way deluge will ever be considered again. You can PM me but be aware that it has to be essentially effortless on my part and also because the devs claimed it was a problem with libtorrent, you'd have to verify that stats correctly report when older builds of libtorrent are used.

I've been playing around with that option for a while and I notice a big difference when clients I'm uploading to are not connected via uTP. It seems a lot of the consistency problem is directly related to utorrent throttling upload bandwidth to peers connected via the uTP protocol. Also, as per the utorrent 1.9 to 2.0 change notes:
Quote:
- Feature: uTP can be enabled or disabled using "Enable bandwidth management" checkbox in Preferences

Quote:
"3) Options-->Preferences-->BitTorrent-->"Enable bandwidth management" bypasses "bt.transp_disposition"? Enabling is the same as "bt.transp_disposition = 15?"

Yes, the checkbox provides a simplified interface to the transp_disposition. If you want more detail control, you can still change the advanced option.

So simply unchecking that box will toggle your bt.transp_disposition between 15 and 5 in 2.0, but in earlier versions it must be disabled via the advanced option. I also found this answer intriguing:
Quote:

Yes, it is. However you have to manually set bt.transp_disposition to 13 to allow incoming uTP connections but NOT make outgoing uTP connections. And you'll probably also have to disable a couple advanced settings (bt.tcp_rate_control AND net.calc_overhead) or your upload speed will probably go down when you get a uTP connection.

I'm going to see how bt.transp_disposition 13 works for a while. If i still end up with stuff I'm seeding connected via uTP, I'll change it down to 5 to force TCP on both incoming and outgoing connections.

Excellent info SB, TYVM :D
