Background

A UFC Light Heavyweight Championship bout between former champion Jon Jones and former title challenger Alexander Gustafsson is expected to headline this event. As the current divisional champion Daniel Cormier is focusing on defending his UFC Heavyweight Championship, the promotion has indicated that he would be stripped of his title and that the winner of the proposed Jones/Gustafsson bout would become the undisputed champion. Jones and Gustafsson have fought previously in September of 2013 at UFC 165 with Jones defending his title by unanimous decision. The rematch was previously booked to headline UFC 178 in September of 2014, but the pairing was scrapped after Gustafsson tore his right meniscus and lateral collateral ligament.

A UFC Women's Featherweight Championship bout between current champion Cris Cyborg (who is also a former Strikeforce Women's Featherweight Champion and Invicta FC Featherweight Champion) and current UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion Amanda Nunes is expected to take place at the event. If successful, Nunes will become the first woman to be champion in two divisions simultaneously and third fighter overall (after Conor McGregor at UFC 205 and Daniel Cormier at UFC 226), as well as the sixth person overall to win a title in different divisions. This will be the fourth time in UFC history that champions in different divisions fight for the same title, following UFC 94, UFC 205 and UFC 226.

A women's flyweight bout between Sijara Eubanks and Jessica Eye was expected to take place at this event, but Eubanks was pulled from the bout on October 2 in favor of a headliner for the vacant UFC Women's Flyweight Championship against former UFC Women's Bantamweight Championship challenger Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 230. However, that fight was canceled a week later. Eubanks remained on the card at UFC 230 and fought against former title challenger Roxanne Modafferi, while Eye found a new opponent at UFC 231.

Tom Duquesnoy was expected to face Nathaniel Wood at the event. However, Duquesnoy pulled out of the fight on November 12 citing a rib injury. Wood is now expected to face Andre Ewell.

A bantamweight bout between Brian Kelleher and Montel Jackson was initially slated to take place at UFC 230. However the fight was cancelled on the day of the event due to a medical issue for Kelleher and was rescheduled for this event.

Jon Jones drug test controversy

The event was originally expected to take place at T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada, part of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Area. However on December 23, the event was moved to The Forum in Inglewood, California due to a Jones drug testing abnormality stemming from earlier this month. The test found a trace amount of turinabol, in Jones' system. That's the same substance he tested positive for in 2017 that led to the 15-month suspension he recently was cleared from in order to fight this week. Because the Nevada State Athletic Commission does not have proper time to investigate in order to keep Jones cleared to fight in Las Vegas, the UFC decided to move the entire event to Inglewood as the California State Athletic Commission will grant Jones a license. UFC VP of Athlete Health and Performance Jeff Novitzky said USADA, in consultation with other organizations, believes the test is a "pulsing" effect and not a new ingestion of the substance that he tested positive for after UFC 214 in July 2017.

Event moved to California due to remains of banned substance not yet completely gone from Jones blood.

Jones did not test positive again, even if media loves the headline lol

How could the traces still be in his system from last year? He had multiple tests and it never came up until now? I don't understand this at all

With respect for any external events that I don't know about that could have affected the results of the tests, I have never heard of a substance remaining in the body that long after the consuming of the product stopped. He has obviously used steroids, but that the small amount he currently has in his body is too small to consider to be cheating according to California athletic commission.

You know who I feel bad for? Dana. Can you imagine how he feels when he hears this? I mean the guy really has a patience that is admirable. I think I would have gone fucking mad. Dana is a fucking saint! Love that guy.

Ok so...

From the Background in first post above: "The test found a trace amount of turinabol, in Jones' system."

I tried to do some research and found this article on Medium

https://medium.com/@biopharmchem2016/how-long-do-steroids-stay-in-your-system-cf97b176402f

I quote:

More than one year

Deca-Durabolin, Norandren, Dynabolan, Anabolicum, Turanabol Depot, Durabolin, Anabolin, Fenobolin, and Turinabol all remain in the system for 12 to 18 months. If you take any of these compounds, be aware that you will likely be unable to pass a steroid test for 12 to 18 months. Since it’s very often hard to predict what field we’ll be in over a year from now, these substances should be avoided.

(This article was written in 2016)

So it does seem like it could indeed be a remnant from Jones former violation.

Hmm? It's so hard to believe him though isn't it? How is it only he gets caught out for this in his system again, shouldn't we have heard more stories of steriods still being in somebody's sytem 12-18 months after as well as Jon's? It can't be a coincidence that he has the worst luck ever lol! It's so tough to believe.

If this trace was so small and insignificant, then why not say nothing? Just makes everyone look bad now. Awful situation for the fans who were going to Vegas for maybe a holiday of a lifetime.

Jones either has the worst luck ever or he probably microdoses or something?

* Many legends were using back in the day. TBH I just wanna see Jon fight either way, but in this USADA-era we're supposed to be watching clean athletes?

Yeah its hard to believe it at all. I mean already last time it seemed so incredibly stupid to get caught, again, it was hard to think it was even real. It's like either someone is tainting his food lol or he is completely mad for doing it, again. Neither is a good option.

This time, because its scientifically possible to test positive again in a very small amount this long after I think most people are prepared to believe it. Nobody really wants Jones to get caught for steroids and most people really want to see him fight.

What REALLY happened? I certainly do not now. Maybe some day we can read Jones memoirs where he reveals it all. :D
