Five fighters, including main-card light-heavyweight opponents Glover Teixeira and Fabio Maldonado, were issued medical suspensions of up to 180 days following this past weekend's UFC 153 event.
UFC 153 took place Oct. 13 at Rio de Janeiro's HSBC Arena.
With the lack of an athletic commission to govern the event, UFC officials took the role of overseeing the fight card. They recently released the suspensions to the Association of Boxing Commissions.
Teixeira and Maldondo, of course, were involved in one of the night's most brutal matchups, though the action was considerably one-sided. Teixeira dominated the fight from the opening bell, but a brave Maldonado refused to give up, and the fight was waved off only after doctors decided it was not wise for him to enter the third round.
Maldonado, who had trouble standing at the end of the fight, must now receive neurological clearance before returning to action or sit out 180 days.
Meanwhile, Teixeira also faces a potantial 180-day suspension unless he can produce a negative X-ray of his right hand and right elbow.
Other fighters receiving potential 180-day suspensions include both Chris Camozzi and Luiz Cane, who fought on the evening's preliminary card, as well as "The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil" finalist Sergio Moraes, who earned a third-round submission win over Renee Forte on the evening's preliminary card.
Camozzi's order is due to a potentially broken nasal bone while Can's includes concerns about both his nasal bone and left orbital. Meanwhile, Moraes order requires and MRI to his right knee and clearance from a physician.
In total, 13 of UFC 153's fighters received medical suspensions. The list includes:
