Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg" received another significant addition of talent today, as Strikeforce officially added a heavyweight title fight between current champion Alistair Overeem (29-11) and challenger Fabricio Werdum (11-4-1).
MMAjunkie.com (
http://www.mmajunkie.com) confirmed the addition to the Aug. 15 card, which will take place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., with Strikeforce Director of Communications Mike Afromowitz.
With Strikeforce's first female belt on the line, as well as a lightweight title unification contest, "Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg" will now have three championship contests.
Overeem earned the Strikeforce heavyweight title with a submission win over Paul Buentello in November 2007. "Demolition Man" has yet to defend the title, but Overeem has gone 3-0 since the win, with one no-contest decision against Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, while fighting for the Japanese-based DREAM organization, as well as the Dutch organization Glory.
A four-time UFC veteran, Werdum last fought in a first-round TKO loss to Junior dos Santos at UFC 90 in October 2008. Werdum had figured to factor into the UFC's heavyweight title picture after back-to-back wins over Brandon Vera and Gabriel Gonzaga, but the organization elected to release the Brazilian following the loss to dos Santos.
The title fight will be a rematch of a May 2006 bout under the PRIDE banner. Werdum earned a second-round submission win in the first contest.
With the addition to the card, "Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg" now includes:
* Gina Carano vs. Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos (for Strikeforce women's 145-pound title)
* Champ Josh Thomson vs. Gilbert Melendez (for Strikeforce world lightweight title)
Rumours that Thomson is injured * Champ Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum (for Strikeforce world heavyweight title)
Cancelled * Nick Diaz vs. Joe Riggs (for vacant Strikeforce world welterweight title)
Cancelled * Roger Gracie vs. TBA*
* Billy Evangelista vs. TBA*
* Poppies Martinez vs. TBA*
* Erin Toughill vs. TBA
4 Title fights in one event. Not bad.
