Shane Carwin vs. Cain Velasquez in works for UFC 104 in Los Angeles on Oct. 24 by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Jul 01, 2009 at 5:50 pm ET Attachment: shane-carwin-2.jpg [ 69.99 KiB | Viewed 16246 times ] A heavyweight contest between top undefeated prospects Shane Carwin (11-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) and Cain Velasquez (6-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) is currently in the works for UFC 104. If finalized, the bout would likely feature on the main card of the Oct. 24 pay-per-view event, which will take place at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Sources close to the bout, which was first reported by MMAMadness.com, have confirmed to MMAjunkie.com (http://www.mmajunkie.com) that Carwin has verbally accepted the contest, while Velasquez is expected to follow suit. Carwin also confirmed his participation in the contest with a post on his Twitter account. "Looks like I'll be fighting Oct. 24 in Los Angeles," Carwin stated. "Excited to know." Jason Genet, Carwin's manager, pointed MMAjunkie.com to his client's Twitter message when asked about the fight. While unable to confirm the status of the fight, he said a potential matchup with Velasquez is just the type of opportunity they want. "For Team Carwin, we want to fight whoever it takes to fight for that belt," Genet said. "Cain, whoever – we are excited to be getting an opportunity. Shane is ready to continue the climb to the top of the division." The potential contest between the highly regarded heavyweights would likely determine the division's No. 1 contender, though the winner of the UFC 102 between MMA legends Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrgio Nogueira may also figure prominently in the immediate title picture. Carwin, who has never fought beyond the first round in his near-four-year career, has needed just three minutes and 24 seconds to dispatch of Gabriel Gonzaga, Neil Wain and Christian Wellisch in his three fights for the UFC. The Gonzaga contest, which took place in March, was Carwin's most recent appearance in the octagon. Velasquez last fought in June, earning a unanimous decision over Cheick Kongo at UFC 99 in Germany. The win was Velasquez's fourth straight in the octagon, a streak that also includes wins over Denis Stojnic, Jake O'Brien and Brad Morris. Yes very cool indeed, as this is the UFC I will hopefully be attending. Looking forward to see what other fights they put on at this event. Carwin vs Velasquez should be a great fight. |

Can't wait for this one. Thought they might both have had one more fight before the UFC matched them against each other, especially after Velasquez didn't finish his last fight and they want to highlight him as a wrecking machine. Carwin is definately a wrecking machine though... For me, this is definately the number one contender fight. The Nog/Randy fight will be interesting, but I don't see either of them as champion again, whereas these two are both going to be very prominent in the division over the next few years - Velasquez for a long time to come - and both could well be the champion in very short order. |

I can still see Nog as champion again. We have to remember that he was sick in his match against Mir. If Brock wins, I can imagine UFC make the Nog vs Brock for the title. Still I guess most fans hope to see Carwin vs Brock. But dont think Carwin will be able to get through Cain Velasquez. |
