Shane Carwin announced earlier today that he expects to fight on New Year’s day at UFC 125, but he isn’t sure who his opponent will be. Well, according to MMA Fighting, it could be Roy Nelson who Carwin got into a mini-twitter feud with when he was first linked to a federal steroid conspiracy case.
The UFC is hoping to put together a heavyweight fight between contenders Shane Carwin and Roy Nelson on Jan. 1, MMA Fighting has learned.
Nelson’s camp wasn’t immediately available for comment, but Carwin’s camp informed MMA Fighting that they have yet to be offered a fight against “Big Country.”
However, other sources close to the fight, have confirmed with MMA Fighting that the organization is looking to match up the heavyweights at UFC 125 on New Year’s Day.
As you may remember, Nelson took a shot at Carwin when the steroid scandal first broke. Rather than respond to the story, Carwin responded to Nelson, which Roy’s fans questioned.
Nelson: “Just woke up and was reading the mma news websites and only one had real news ufc champ shane carwin steroids court case… I am surprised that athletes in mma do steroids ;( that explains body types”
Carwin: “I love Roy Nelson trying to elevate his status by talking smacks. Hopefully he is doing so on a treadmil. Some have rolls he has a bakery… what surgey? Roy getting the lap band? “
Nelson: RT @katchphraze: @roynelsonmma is bang on. Before carwin comments on roy nelson he should make a formal statement.
Nelson: RT @axemaster: How can @shanecarwin even begin 2 talk shit bout @roynelsonmma while hes in the middle of a steriod scandal? Roy may eat but he don’t cheat.
While they’re beef would certainly add interest to the fight, it’s not guaranteed to happen. Nelson underwent knee surgery after his loss to Junior Dos Santos at UFC 117, and he may not be ready for a Jan. 1 fight. If that’s the case, the fight could be pushed back a month according to the report. Or presumably not happen at all.
Either way, Carwin sounds anxious to return to the cage. In a blog post published on his website today, Carwin said his strength & conditioning trainer, John Chaimberg, is working him into the best shape of his life. He wants a “complete war” when he gets back in the cage and plans to prove he deserves a “place at the top of the mountain.”
