It was only a matter of time before someone published this story, right? In the wake of James Toney’s halfhearted loss to Randy Couture last weekend at UFC 118, BoxingScene.com reports that pound-for-pound boxing king Manny Pacquiao says he’d be interested in bringing his skills to the cage, too. Obviously there’s no chance this ever happens – and we assume the next few months will be full of breathless “(Insert Famous Boxer’s Name Here) Also Interested in MMA!” stories – but it is at least interesting to note that even the best pugilist on the planet is willing to give lip service to fighting in our sport.
It’s also worthwhile to follow the link just to read the few comments on Boxing Scene’s original story. We don’t want to spoil it for you, but let’s just say there is across-the-board agreement from guys with names like “Neck Snapper” that “Pac” would destroy these “UFC fags.” There also seems to be some confusion about the proper use of “there, their and they’re.” Just saying.
The initial report from Boxing Scene says it’s hard to know if Pacquiao was “just joking around,” but when a pair of the website’s reporters asked the boxer about fighting in MMA “during a recent press conference” he had this to say: “I want to, but they (boxing promoter Bob Arum and advisor Michael Koncz) don’t want me to fight.”
We already know what Arum thinks about MMA, and it’s inconceivable that anybody in their right mind would ever allow boxing’s most valuable commodity to fight a mixed-rules bout, but that didn’t stop Koncz from cutting in to tell Pacquiao, “you know that you could do what you want.”
Riiiight. Boxers get to do exactly what they want and fight who they want all the time. That’s why the world has already been treated to that stellar three-fight trilogy between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather that set PPV rec—oh, wait. Never mind.
On a personal note, if the Pac Man wanted to climb in the cage with somebody like Jose Aldo at 145-pounds, I say bring it on.Source:
