A welterweight match-up between Mike "The Joker" Guymon (12-3-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and Daniel Roberts (10-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) is targeted for UFC 121.
Sources close to the event today confirmed to MMAjunkie.com that verbal agreements are in place with bout agreements expected to be signed shortly.
UFC 121 takes place Oct. 23 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., and features a heavyweight title match between current champion Brock Lesnar and challenger Cain Velasquez.
Guymon and Roberts' octagon records mirror each other. Guymon, an 11-year veteran of the sport, got his first UFC win in May when he sent Yoshiyuki Yoshida packing with a unanimous decision nod at UFC 113.
The affable Guymon banged up his knee during the three-round scrap, though he has since been nursing it and will be ready to go for the Southern California event. Earlier today, he thanked his fans for bombarding the UFC with requests to secure him a spot on UFC 121.
After a lifetime of pining for a shot in the big show, Guymon did not get an easy break for his octagon debut. He met young lion Rory MacDonald at UFC Fight Night 20 and fell prey to an armbar in the first round.
A win streak would put him on cloud nine.
Roberts managed to shrug off the memory of a devastating octagon debut in his most recent performance at UFC 116. After John Howard knocked him out cold with a leaping punch at UFC on Versus 1, he took on Forrest Petz at the July 3 event as a replacement for an injured Julio Paulino. In a closely contested fight, he won by split decision.
A San Francisco transplant, Roberts trains with the Cesar Gracie Fight Team and works alongside Jake Shields, who is scheduled to make his long-awaited UFC debut at the Anaheim event.
Guymon vs. Roberts is expected for the preliminary card of UFC 121. Source: http://mmajunkie.com/news/20107/mike-gu ... relims.mma
