EFC Welterweight Champion Zaakir Badat has his next title defense locked and loaded, facing off against Nigerian knuckle-knocker Segun “Machinegun Shegz” Ogunnoki in the main event of EFC 124, taking place on 5 June.
One of the most impressive 170-pounders in the new era of mixed martial arts, Badat remains undefeated on African soil, with few competitors left brave enough to challenge him inside the Hexagon. His last three bouts, all against top-tier opposition, ended in the first round—thanks either to his sandman-summoning right hand or his submission-snatching grappling. It takes a special kind of warrior to even consider this challenge.
Originally, the opportunity was offered to Ndidi Alonu, who was unable to accept the bout. With top contender Peace Nguphane recently competing, EFC matchmakers looked west and unearthed a worthy challenger from Abuja.
Up steps Ogunnoki, a three-time national kickboxing champion who has never been submitted in his MMA career. With five finishes in six AKO victories, “Machinegun” is fully loaded for the biggest fight of his life.
Co-Main Event & Main Card Action
The co-main event sees 2024 breakout star Thimna Mhlauli, who has dominated the bantamweight division, take on former title contender Sibusiso Sovendle, now battling to retain his top-ranking status.
Also featured on the main card:
Steven “Guts” Goncalves, Mhlauli’s teammate, faces the undefeated Chadrack “Baba Yaga” Yemba. Osvaldo Benedito of Angolan Top Team returns to action, matched against Gqeberha’s heavy-handed Kevin “Snakes” Pretorius. Opening the main card, Lihle “Rush Hour” Ngamntwini aims to avoid the submission traps of grappling ace Kelvin Smit.
Undercard Highlights
The undercard features six thrilling contests, showcasing a lethal mix of current and former top contenders across multiple divisions.
Once again, EFC is poised to deliver a spectacular night of combat, representing the best fighting talent on the African continent, capped off with a massive welterweight title showdown in the latest chapter of the storied Nigeria vs. South Africa rivalry.
