Sherk scratched; Gugerty to face Guida at UFC on Versus 1 in March (Updated)
A rumored bout between former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk (33-4-1 MMA, 7-4 UFC) and Clay Guida (25-11 MMA, 5-5 UFC) has been scratched from the UFC's first live card on Versus.
The March 21 bout was recently described as "abandoned" by FiveOuncesOfPain.com, and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has since confirmed that Sherk was removed from the potential matchup due to an undisclosed injury.
However, MMAjunkie.com confirmed Friday that Shannon Gugerty (12-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) has agreed to step in for "The Muscle Shark" and face Guida.
Verbal agreements are in place for both fighters, though bout agreements have yet to be distributed.
UFC on Versus 1 is slated for The Odeum in Broomfield, Colo., and features a light heavyweight headliner between Jon Jones and Brandon Vera.
Gugerty most recently appeared at UFC 105, where he was submitted by British up-and-comer Terry Etim via guillotine choke in the second round. Prior to that, Gugerty netted an impressive decision victory over Matt Grice at UFC 100 this past July.
Since making his octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 14, the San Diego-based fighter has alternated between wins and losses in four octagon appearances.
Guida, meanwhile, has lost his past two outings, most recently falling prey to Kenny Florian by submission at UFC 107. Before that, "The Carpenter" was bested in a gritty decision loss to Diego Sanchez at The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale, a bout that was ultimately awarded both by MMAjunkie.com readers and at the 2009 Fighters Only Mixed Martial Arts Awards as the "Fight of the Year."
Despite a pedestrian 5-5 record in the UFC, the Johnsburg, Ill., native has still managed to pick up three "Fight of the Night" honors for his wild-haired fighting style.
The full nature of Sherk's injury is currently unknown, and the former lightweight champion was not immediately available for comment when contacted by MMAjunkie.com.
It is unknown at this time whether Guida vs. Gugerty will grace the televised portion of the Versus TV card.
