Most people have difficulty remembering a decade ago; Conor McGregor’s legendary 2 division run, the “Mannequin challenge”, Harambe, and Stranger Things were some of the trends that were widely popular in 2016. One trend that made major headlines was a young kid making his UFC debut in his hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia at UFC on Fox. The ‘prototype’ for young Canadian Featherweights made his first of four UFC appearances as Jeremy “JBC” Kennedy went on to get his first taste of World-level competition, eventually competing for the Bellator World Featherweight title against Patricio Pitbull in 2024. After a long and healthy career outside of the organization, Kennedy brings his world-level MMA game back to his roots, on September 4th at BFL 84. With Kennedy returning to regional competition, we have a new headliner as he takes on former challenger Jeremy Henry for the Interim Lightweight title.
Starting his amateur career with BFL, Kennedy amassed an 7-1 record en route to capturing the BFL Amateur Featherweight title. The next logical step in his MMA journey was a jump to the BFL pro circuit, one that Kennedy met with flying colours. Amassing an 8-0 record as a pro, including winning the BFL World Featherweight title against undefeated Mario Pereira and a huge win against Drew Brokenshire in May of 2016 – Kennedy got the call up to the UFC big show in August of 2016. He was dominant in his first victory in a major organization, and during his tenure with the UFC went on to win 3 of 4 bouts, losing only to current 2 time World Champion Alexander Volkanovski. While a jump to Bellator and PFL led him to compete all across the world against some of the top contenders in the featherweight class, Kennedy is looking for a fresh start in a new division where the weight cut will no longer be a major factor in his preparation. Returning to make his 10th BFL appearance, Kennedy is a reminder of the early years of the sport in British Columbia, competing on the 3rd BFL card against Cam Deleurme in a title eliminator back in 2010. While the level of competition has grown since the early days, the King is back to test himself against the next generation of combatants.
Standing in his way will be a former Lightweight title challenger who will be making his 2nd consecutive walk to the BFL cage for a World title. He’s that good. Jeremy “Bad Combination” Henry has been a standout on UFC Fight Pass since winning a regional title in a first round finish against Canadian standout Alex Morgan at Unified 59. His trademark walk to the cage – hands wide, knees coming up to the roof and eccentric personality may give the impression that he can be taken lightly, but he’s no joke in the cage. 3 consecutive bouts he’s been the underdog to win in regional championship bouts and all three times he’s finished his opponents to win 3 different promotional titles. He brings chaotic beauty into the cage with every matchup, including a violent 1st round finish against former UFC competitor Khama Worthy earlier this year. He’s the type of fighter that is ready to compete with the best at any moment – competing 7 times in 2024 including the 3 mentioned title wins, and will be competing for his 5th time in 2025 when he makes his 2nd BFL appearance against Kennedy. It’s easy to think that someone like Kennedy will have an advantage in his hometown against the American, but Henry was able to take current 155 Lbs champion Navid Zanganeh to the judges scorecards without looking like he’d taken any damage. He may prove all the doubters wrong once again when he meets Kennedy for his 4th major regional title.
Having Jeremy Kennedy back in the BFL circuit is huge for Canadian MMA. BFL president Jay Golshani once again pulled the trigger on a major matchup to shake up the division with this new main event and move forward with a new champion leading into the final event of 2025 in October at BFL 85 just two days before the UFC returns to Vancouver. If Kennedy is victorious, he may come full circle with another return to the UFC in his hometown… but not if “Bad Combination” has something to say about it.
