Kick boxer Mark Fowler died after collapsing in the ring during a fight in Sydney on Saturday
A British kickboxing champion has died after collapsing during a fight in Australia.
Mark Fowler who was nicknamed Sharky, was defending his World Boxing Council (WBC) Muay Thai Lightweight title in Sydney.
He collapsed during the fifth round of the fight on Saturday night after sustaining injuries to the head.
The 35-year-old fighter, who had won the title in March, failed to regain consciousness and died in hospital two days later.
New South Wales Sports Minister Graham Annesley has ordered an inquiry into the death which will be investigated by the coroner.
He said: 'I have also instructed the Office of Communities to implement any additional precautions considered necessary to ensure all similar upcoming events fully comply with current legislation and safety requirements.'
In a statement posted on the internet Andrew Parnham, a trainer at Fowler's gym, said: 'Mark was a team mate, a role model, a friend, and a brother to all of us.'May you rest in peace brother.'
The Muay Thai organization has paid tribute to Mark describing him as one of the brightest stars of the sport.
Muay Thai involves fighters using their fists, feet, knees and elbows.
In the wake of Mark's death there have been renewed calls for the authorities to change the regulations governing the sport.

the crazy me says:
wow... this happened right in my backyard and i havent heard anything about it...
i hope they dont pass some stupid fucking laws that make it hard for mma to continue in australia...
the guy got in the ring knowing full well what the risks were...
if he didnt want to die then he should have fought better...
isnt that the point of fighting anyway... to not die? =\

the less crazy me says:
i get that people are gonna say it was the ref or the doctors fault...
but what about the fighters responsibility...? if he knew something was wrong he could have stopped or quit anytime...
its a sad occurence but it doesnt require anything more than grieving for a lost warrior... ^:)^
the fact that deaths in the ring happen so fucking rarely should show that regulations are fine!

As far as I understand it happened during a Muay Thai fight, not MMA, so I think the future of MMA in Australia should be safe in realtion to this accident.

politicians are motherfuckers just looking to screw everyone over...
i honestly think governments see their role in the world as trying to stop everyone and anyone from having any real fun! =\
