Some users have problems with connectivity and their upload speed. Not being connectable also affects your download speed.

Image

From this example we can see that seeder is not connectable and regardless of his possible upload capacity this torrent isn't going full speed.
Reason for that is closed port. For those not understanding what port is lets just say that you have closed door and then you are trying to push something through the keyhole. Something like that is happening with your upload or download.

To solve this problem there is very easy guide on http://www.portforward.com

My suggestion would be that you use really high port number as some ports are used by specific applications so they might not work properly. Best bet would be 60000, easy to remember and it's not reserved for some specific apps.

Also setting up Static IP which is mentioned at the site IS NOT same as Static IP on your ISP.
It's just number from which your PC communicates with your router or modem.

For Windows users

I wrote these quick guides back in 2005 for dc but I guess they are still actual

maybe this can help someone out a little:

First some easy guides on how to see what internal IP your computer has right now if you choose to portforward to it you need to know it.

(Later a guide by the bottom on how to set your internal IP to static.)

How To Find internal IP for router port forwarding (to):

Startmenu / Control Panel / Network Connections
---> Rightclick on the network connection you use
---> choose Propierties
---> Scroll down the small window and choose Internet Protocol
---> click propierties
---> there it is on the top 192.168.1.xx (x = your cpu)

(or klick start button, then run, then type cmd in the box
and klick ok, then in black window type ipconfig and hit enter)

Get your internal IP and/or DNS in case you need to know your DNS too:

Startmenu / Control Panel / Network Connections
---> Rightclick on the network connection you use
---> Status window of network connection
---> Support tab
--->Details button

But most important

Change to static internal IP in your Comp

Startmenu / Control Panel / Network Connections
---> Rightclick on the network connection you use
---> choose Propierties
---> Scroll down the small window and choose Internet Protocol
---> click propierties
---> there by the top you see "Use following IP address"
---> tic it
---> Fill in 192.168.1.99 (99 is a fictive number, you can in theory use any but 99 is a good number for several reasons I wont go into here)
---> Fill in your DNS in the lower boxes
---> Make sure you put 192.168.1.99 as IP to portforward to in the router
---> Save config in the router and restart it if needed
---> IMPORTANT You will loose connection for a sec and its important that you remember how to change back in case you did it wrong...

Now your internal IP should be static

*******************************************

What is "my internal IP" and why do I want it static?

When you connect one or more computers to a router they all get assigned an internal IP when they are started.
Normally, but not always, the first that starts will get 192.168.1.100. Sometimes it can be a random number, but often between 100 and 200.

Thing is that if you have your own computer, your sisters, your laptop, your mothers and your dogs computer all connected to the same router, each computer will be assigned an internal IP and they will all be different. Each time you restart your computer you could be assigned a new internal IP that in worst case is one that before was assigned to another computer, This can happen with just one computer connected too, if its enough time between turing off the machine and restarting it.

Internal IP is like each computer has its adress and the router knows what package goes to what adress by knowing where to route them by knowing the internal IP.

If your Internal IP is dynamic (aka changes), then you might get another internal IP next time you turn on the computer, and maybe you will get the internal IP that your laptop had before. Or a completely new one.

This complicates things when you portforward in the router, Suddenly the port you opened for internal IP 192.168.1.101 that you had when you setup the portforward is now not open anymore because you rebooted and got a new internal IP.

So the idea is to set it in your network connection settings on your PC or laptop so that you will always have 192.168.1.101 and so that it wont change when you restart the computer.

Now the router will have the port you have opened always open for that internal IP.

And thats the whole point.

(Vista is even more complicated off course because it sucks but its same just have to press ok and yes more times)

Some routers you can use hostname instead of IP to forward port so if you have such a router it definitely makes things a little simpler. One thing that helps download and upload is to increase the amount of tcp half-open connections allowed you have to patch tcpip.sys google for "Event 4226 tcpip" Once you have OS patched you need to increase amount of connections in your client.

Also good tool for your PC in general not just for opening TCP is Tune Up Utilities 2009. Does lots of things automatically if you are afraid of doing anything on your own.

Good tip miz, Tuneup Utilities is a program I can also recommend.

And as you so well said res0r9lm its important to change the settings in your torrentclient so that it allows m,ore connections at the same time. especially if you have a fast line and download a lot!
