Speaking of picks, I took a bath on those horrible prelims (3-3, 6-4 overall). It's so hard to pick fights when you get guys that should be competing at Wild Bill's Fight Night shows. There was almost no tape or information on any of the 12 guys who fought on the undercard. It's frustrating doing well on the main card and getting screwed on the prelims.

I agree that the prelim card was full of unknown fighters. I went to the SF webpage and they did not even show pictures or links to their own fighters on the card. The only ones that were linked were the ones on the main card and Miller. Still shows that SF needs to start realising they have to think about more than just a few big bouts. Internet, good broadcasting and hosts, quality fighters but mostly a good structure from all grounds of these aspects. However when it comes to your picks, the prelims often make the difference and the hunt for information is, together with extra suspense during a fight, the addiction of this competition ;)

About the extra fight that was not on the card. Ridiculous, bad for MMA, very bad for SF and really bad directing from the broadcaster. At UFC they switched to something else within a few seconds after the power went down at the Nelson vs Struve match. It took CBS several minutes to go to commercials and the shouting: We are on national TV people was really pathetic just like the whole rumble. It somehow reminded me of the set up bullying from the old WWF.

What do you think?

Truth be told I picked Mousasi, so he was my lone main-card disappointment. I was really surprised that he was so inert off his back and didn't start going to the body with kicks - I mean, he was going to get taken down anyway so why not let the kicks go?

Regarding prelims, I'd leave them I guess. I like how having to pick relatively unknown fighters forces me to investigate new talent that I wouldn't otherwise know about. For this event I picked the main card pretty quickly (despite flip-flopping on Mousasi/Lawal a few times) but spent a lot of time investigating the prelims. I was only able to find video on 3 or 4 of these guys and there was a lot of variation in how their records are reported in the various online databases (the Sherdog fight finder seem to be pretty conservative). Most major events, particularly UFC cards, are not nearly as bad as this Strikeforce event in this regard. It's something we'll just have to deal with from time to time.

One last thing re: prelims with really unknown fighters. While I like the having an excuse and a context to scout new MMA talent, when they are as unknown as most of these SF fighters it comes down to just picking one as a complete guess. This isn't satisfying in any way: even if you pick correctly it's not based on reasoning and deductive prowess, but blind chance. Having said that, I still think it's better overall to just leave the competitions as-is for the sake of consistency.

Agreed. Im certainly not in favour of making up competitions by taking a few fights from various events, just doesnt make sense.
Sure, there unknowns every now and again like this, but everyones in the same boat, so its fair.

I'm kind of surprised to hear people saying Hendo looked old - even the commentary team made that statement.

I didn't think he looked appreciably older, he's just a lot more one-dimensional than many people realize and Shields is an incredibly good grappler. I picked Shields to win based on the fact that Henderson has only one weapon on the feet (big right hand that he always telegraphs) and has demonstrated that he's not good off his back (this is most prominent in the Rampage fight). Granted, Shields has no weapons on the feet, but I felt he was a smart enough fighter to plan for that right hand by circling to the right and picking his shots. He didn't do that in the first round and we all saw the results. We also saw how great Jake's recovery ability is. As great a fighter as Henderson is, even in his prime he would have had trouble with Shields on the ground.

Hendo isn't suffering so much from age as his failure to evolve new skills. On the feet you only have to worry about one thing. If you don't constantly circle into it you won't end up like Bisping. Get him on his back and he's very beatable.

3 title bouts so a lot of expectations but they were disappointing.
why 3?
Also did not like the commentators talking about results of ufc 112. luckely i had seen that one before this event. And the Miller incident was redicilous. he got bullied :)
