Two former Strikeforce fighters are looking for their first UFC win on August 31st.
Ryan Couture and Quinn Mulhern did not have the greatest of debuts in their respective UFC fights earlier this year. Mulhern is dropping to lightweight to take on Couture in what will surely be a "loser gets cut" contest at UFC 164 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. UFC officials confirmed the fight earlier today according to The MMA Report.
Couture (6-2) finished his Strikeforce career with a highly controversial split decision win over K.J. Noons in January. Ryan was then given a tough UFC draw in Ross Pearson at UFC on Fuel 9, and after neutralizing Pearson's offense in round 1 (admittedly not creating much of his own), he was knocked out in round 2. Based on his last two performances it would be logical to think that a loss vs. Mulhern would ensure us of zero fighters named Couture in the UFC.
Mulhern (18-3) went 3-1 in Strikeforce, including a split decision win over Yuri Villefort, before stepping in on short notice to fight Rick Story at UFC 158 in Montreal. Story easily dismantled Mulhern and ultimately finished him with strikes in the 1st round. Quinn's only other defeats have come against current UFC welterweight Jason High and former UFC welterweight Mike Guymon. This will be Mulhern's first fight at lightweight, and at 6'3" he'll be one of the tallest in the division.
UFC 164 takes place on August 31st in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Ben Henderson defends his lightweight title against T.J. Grant in the main event, while Josh Barnett battles Frank Mir in the co-main event. Couture vs. Mulhern will likely be on the preliminary card.
