First Bellator event I've watched, having heard fantastic things about the organisation. Wonder what you guys thought of the event, and indeed general comments on Bellator?
Pat Curran vs. Mike Ricci DOOSH! What a knockout. Mad brutal. Wasn't a great deal happening before that. Year Of The Overhand Right.
Wilson Reis vs. Shad Lierleyi Kick-ass fight, really great action. First round especially had a bit of everything; striking, BJJ, transitions, classic MMA. Thought Reis was very impressive, slick submission. Check out the ref raising his hand at the end, beautiful! He has such a nice face and seems really proud to present Reis's raised hand to the camera, doesn't stop holding hands for ages.
Ben Askren vs. Ryan Thomas Obviously a huge shame the way it finished. Thomas's face was pretty purple, but yeah the referee didn't do enough to make sure he was out. He certainly could have been out ten seconds later for all we know, but hey. Seems like Askren is being bigged up quite hard for his Olympian credentials.
Toby Imada vs. James Krause Imada looked pretty good but didn't think Krause seemed up to much, although obviously bearing in mind he was appearing on short notice that's perhaps understandable.
So a great event for my first Bellator watching. From this event and other clips I've seen, the match ups seem generally well thought out and seem to produce good fights, and judging by the clips of the previous rounds, as well as the opening credits, for such a relatively short-running promotion Bellator already seems to have a fantastic array of showcase finishes (obviously including Imada's inverted triangle which will be repeated ad infinitum). I also really like the tournament format; whilst that's nothing new in itself, the way Bellator does it with an event every week for 8 weeks is a real nice burst of easy-to-follow quickfire MMA action. I like.
I think this is a genuine third big-time US promotion. It was a pity that last season was generally Spanish-only, but even then the buzz around them and the highlights of some fights have really built up interest in the promotion. They always have good fights and the production is better than average for sure. They've got an excellent roster of lighter weight talent and a whole bunch of up-and-comers (which separates them from Strikeforce), the shows are frequent and I think the tournament format is proving to still be very popular.
Try last week's event also - that had some more good fights.
The Askren fight had me a bit choked, way to early to stop fight he had his head turned and only one side of neck was blocked off, i think it should be a no contest imo. Askren went on to say it was over and opponent should except defeat gracioulsy, i don`t agree with that. Other 3 fights were great just hate to see a fighter get shit end of stick, it looked really tight but who knows what woulda happened. Askren looked like a fish outta water on his feet and i don`t see him going past next round.
