Article Posted: July 21st, 2011 | By: Oliver Saenz Hello once more fans and friends and welcome to the latest edition of “Crash Course”. “Crash Course” is a series of articles designed to give readers a quick rundown on all the relevant information they need to know heading into an upcoming major MMA event. Everything from why you should watch, what you should expect in the co-main and main event, and even where and when you can find it on TV is all covered in detail. So let’s get right to it with today’s edition, featuring Strikeforce’s “Challengers 17” event.
The Event: Strikeforce “Challengers 17”, currently scheduled for July 22 at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card will be televised live on Showtime starting at 11 PM ET.
Why You Should Care: This is the first “Challengers” event to take place in the new home of the series, the Palms Casino Resort. In addition to that, you’ve got Roger Bowling and Bobby Voelker fighting for a third and likely-final time. You’ve also got well-traveled veteran Devin Cole taking on “Challengers” mainstay Lamar Johnson. And to top it all off, you’ll be getting a great female encounter when Liz Carmouche fights Sarah Kaufman.
What to Look Forward to in the Main Event: In his first fight against Bobby Voelker, the 7-0 (at the time) Bowling took a technical decision after an accidental eye poke sent the fight to the judge’s scorecards preemptively. In the rematch, Voelker TKO’d Bowling in the second round. Voelker is a veteran of over thirty fights, while Bowling is a hungry young upstart. It’s a rivalry that has led to two good fights, and there’s a high chance of the final third encounter being as good or likely better than the first two.
What to Look Forward to in the Co-Main Event: Although it may not take the official co-main event slot when all is said and done, the other fight I’m looking forward to the most on this show is definitely Liz Carmouche vs. Sarah Kaufman. Kaufman is a former champion, while Liz Carmouche recently suffered the first defeat of her career when Marloes Coenen snatched up a Hail Mary armbar after spending the bulk of their fight at the mercy of Carmouche. These are two of the best female fighters in Strikeforce going at it, so what’s not to love?
Why You Should Watch This Card: This is a pretty solid card for a “Challengers” event. It’s got a little bit of everything, and all the fights have their fair share of appeal. There’s not one fight that screams out to be watched over the others, but that means that the show isn’t being built on one fight alone. Unfortunately for some “Challengers” shows, the only interesting fights have been the co-main and main event attractions. For “Challengers 17”, we should be in for a good event overall.
Why You Shouldn’t Watch This Card: As always, the status of the “Challengers” series as late-night programming remains the biggest reason not to watch the series. This event has a good line-up of fighters with all kinds of records and from all walks of life, so I definitely think it’s worth watching. But only if you have the time.
Closing Thoughts: I’m not as excited for this event as I have been for other “Challengers” events, but I do think I’ll be in for a good night of fights. Overall, I like this card and I’ve got a good feeling that several of these fights will end up surprising me before the night is over.Source: http://www.fighters.com/07/21/crash-cou ... 17-edition
