Interesting Bellator / Strikeforce news!

I just heard Bjorn Rebney (Bellator) say in an interview on Sirius Fightclub that Scott Coker (Strikeforce) called him up on the phone and said that right now Gilbert Melendez has a broken hand but as soon as it is healed he is very much interested in a co-promotion where Eddie Alvarez and Gilbert Melendez will be the main card.

Lets hope he tells the full truth and that this fight will happen this autumn!

Lets hope its true. I know Bellator has been trying to set up some co promotion between them and Strikeforce. This could be the start of a powerhouse to better compete with the UFC.

I hope it goes further than that and develops into a full cross-promotion title and ranking system. It seems stupid to have multiple world champions per weight range. Have a UFC champ, a Strikeforce Champ, and a Bellator champ, and so on, then an end of year tournament to crown that years world champ.

Wouldn't THAT be cool? :)

It is indeed stupid to have multiple world champions per promotion but a complete champ vs champ of all promotions will never happen, no matter how cool it will be. Dana will just say this: UFC has the best fighters and the rest is less. If the fighters want to be real world champions then they have to be fighting the best of the best, thus UFC.

Only thing that can happen is a few fighters change promotion or one promotion indeed starts to work together with another one (WEC/UFC, DREAM/SF and maybe SF/Bellator) but a StrikeForce champ will not get an overall title shot unless he goes to UFC (Jake Shields as example). This is why I stopped watching boxing and in less matter also darts.

True, UFC won't willingly join... but if everyone else is involved and they are the odd man out, it will be hard for them to dodge.

Well, a guy can dream, can't he? :)

Eddie Alvarez vs Gilbert Melendez would be an awesome fight.

Hopefully Huerta vs Alvarez will be just as good.
