As expected Jacob Volkmann (10-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) is slotted to fight fellow lightweight Paul Kelly (10-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) in July at UFC 116.
MMAjunkie.com first reported the bout's likelihood this past week, and UFC executives recently made the preliminary-card fight official.
UFC 116 takes place July 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The night's main card, including a heavyweight title-unification bout between champ Brock Lesnar and interim belt-holder Shane Carwin, airs on pay-per-view.
The Volkmann vs. Kelly fight features two former welterweights looking for new life in the lightweight division.
Kelly fights at 155 pounds for the fourth time. He recently picked up his third win in four fights with a submission victory over Matt Veach at UFC 112. The well-rounded British fighter's only career losses have come to Marcus Davis and Dennis Siver, both under the UFC banner.
Volkmann, meanwhile, looks to build off his first UFC win, which came via split-decision over fellow lightweight Ronnys Torres at UFC Fight Night 21. The Minnesota Martial Arts Academy fighter, who's also a licensed chiropractor, dropped to lightweight prior to the bout. Volkmann signed with the UFC in 2009 with a 9-0 record but suffered a decision loss to Paulo Thiago and a submission defeat to Martin Kampmann in his first two bouts.
