Background

LFA announced today that the promotion will return to Brazil in July with a Brazil vs. Latin America team challenge. LFA 187 will feature a fight card filled with top prospects from Brazil and five of its neighboring Latin American countries. They will face off in various weight classes with bragging rights and international recognition on the line.

LFA 187 will be the eighth LFA event to be held on a Saturday and it will be the seventeenth LFA event to take place in Brazil after the promotion’s international expansion began in the summer of 2021. This will also be the tenth LFA event to take place in the state of São Paulo, which is Brazil’s most populous state. LFA has also visited the Brazilian states of Rio de Janeiro and Pernambuco.

LFA 187: Brazil vs. Latin America takes place Saturday, July 6th at the Ginásio do Polvilho in Cajamar, São Paulo, Brazil. The main event will feature a welterweight showdown between former LFA champion Carlos Leal (Team Brazil) and regional kingpin Jose Barrios (Team Latin America).

“We are excited to continue the LFA’s international expansion at LFA 187,” stated LFA CEO Ed Soares. “After beginning our international expansion three summers ago, we have since produced sixteen world-class events abroad. Now we will bring a fight card filled with matches featuring top fighters from Brazil and its neighboring countries in Latin America. This will be the perfect showcase of talent for our Portuguese and Spanish speaking fighters, fans, and media partners in the southern hemisphere. The headlining bout at LFA 187 will see former LFA champion Carlos Leal (Team Brazil) and regional champion Jose Barrios (Team Latin America) meet in a showdown between top welterweight prospects.”

Leal (20-5) is a fighter that signed with the LFA three summers ago and immediately set himself apart from his peers by establishing many firsts for the promotion. “The Lion” became the first fighter to win an LFA world title abroad and the first fighter to win two LFA fights in one night, when he made his LFA debut at LFA 112: Welterweight Grand Prix in July 2021. Leal defeated Diego Dias and Uryan Carlos that night to become the LFA welterweight world champion. The proud Paranaense also found success the past two summers competing in the United States and United Kingdom for the PFL. Now the former champion will look for a triumphant return to the LFA, when he captains Team Brazil in the main event of LFA 187.

Jose Barrios Vargas who was originally going to feature in the main event is out and was replaced by Manuel Mena (12-3).

Manuel Mena (12-3) from Venezuela, 36 years of age and a veteran of the sport, now fighting out of Argentina, has 2 out of a total of of 3 losses in total in his career in his two last fights in Brave FC and FFC so he has something to prove by taking this fight on short notice. This is his chance to show that he is still relevant and his chance to impress an intentional audience in a major organization like LFA where he knows UFC matchmakers will keep an eye.

Expect fireworks!
